A FIFO cover letter with no mining experience should name the role, explain the relevant work you have already done, and make your availability clear. Use a specific example from work, training or volunteering. Say you are entering the industry; do not describe yourself as an experienced mine worker.

Follow the vacancy's instructions first. If the employer asks for a selection-criteria statement or a particular length, provide that. The one-page approach below is an editorial starting point for an ordinary cover letter, not a rule imposed by every employer.

A complete entry-level FIFO cover letter

This is a fictional example, not a successful client's application or a promise of an interview. The applicant has warehouse and retail experience, workplace manual-handling training and two weeks' notice. No mine-site work, high-risk work licence or medical clearance is assumed. The employer and vacancy are fictional too.

Application for Entry-Level Site Support Assistant — Example Resources

Dear Hiring Manager,

My warehouse experience has given me a practical foundation in receiving materials, preparing orders and keeping work areas organised. I am applying for the Entry-Level Site Support Assistant position with Example Resources because the materials-handling and housekeeping duties in your advertisement match work I already carry out. I am looking to bring those skills into my first mine-site role.

At Example Distribution, I check incoming deliveries against paperwork, report shortages or damage and prepare orders for dispatch. When an item does not match the delivery record, I raise the discrepancy before putting it into stock. That approach would be relevant to a site-support team that needs clear records and reliable communication about materials.

Safe handling and orderly work areas are part of my daily routine. I use the handling aids covered by my workplace training, keep pedestrian routes clear and ask for assistance with awkward loads. At shift handover, I explain outstanding orders and stock issues so the incoming team can follow them up. My earlier retail role also involved early starts and weekend shifts.

I have not worked on a mine site and would need the training and induction required for this position. I am based in Perth, can give two weeks' notice and am willing to discuss the advertised roster and travel arrangements. My resume sets out my employment history and completed workplace training.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my materials-handling experience could support your team. Thank you for considering my application.

Kind regards,
[Your name]

Why each paragraph earns its place

The opening connects the target job with existing work. “Any FIFO job” would make that connection harder to assess. Replace the job title and employer every time, and remove any duty the real advertisement does not include.

The second paragraph gives a small, observable example: checking a delivery and raising a discrepancy. It does not claim a saving, production increase or perfect safety record without evidence. Your example might instead concern a cleaning check, a repair, a customer request or a team handover.

The third paragraph explains how the person works. Training in manual handling does not establish a forklift licence. Working in a warehouse does not establish mining isolation experience. Keep those distinctions visible.

The final paragraphs make the transition and practical availability clear. Two weeks' notice is part of this fictional applicant's facts; replace it with your actual situation. Being willing to discuss a roster is different from committing to a particular roster.

If you come from hospitality or cleaning

For a camp-services vacancy, choose evidence about the duties the advertisement actually lists. If the following details are true, an experience paragraph could read:

In my hotel housekeeping role, I clean guest rooms to the daily allocation, check linen supplies and report maintenance issues before the room is released. I follow the cleaning-product instructions and use the protective equipment provided. During busy changeovers, I keep the supervisor informed about rooms that need extra attention so work can be reassigned.

This paragraph is a writing example, not a claim about your background. Add food handling, laundry or kitchen work only if you have done it. A hospitality position is not automatically equivalent to every camp utility role. Pair the letter with our camp utility resume example.

If you come from labouring or trades support

A labourer applying for drilling support or a trades-assistant vacancy can draw on tool preparation, housekeeping, following instructions and reporting hazards, where those tasks are real. Do not write “experienced drillers offsider” because it appears in the advertisement.

For example, “Prepared tools and cleared work areas for tradespeople on residential construction jobs” explains relevant support work without claiming drilling, mining or shutdown experience. If the vacancy requires experience or a licence you lack, check with the employer before investing in the application. Our drillers offsider resume guide explains the distinction between related labouring work and actual drilling experience.

What if you have no paid employment yet?

Use a specific example from school, volunteering, work placement or completed training, with its setting clearly named. Explain what you personally did and how you followed instructions or completed the task. Do not convert a classroom exercise into paid employment.

Keep the letter proportionate to the evidence available. A shorter truthful letter is useful. Repeating “hardworking and reliable” across a page gives the employer little to assess. Choose vacancies that explicitly accept beginners, trainees or apprentices and meet the application instructions.

Should you mention tickets, work rights or a medical?

List relevant qualifications and licences you actually hold, using their correct names. State an expiry date or “current” only after checking it. If a course is booked or incomplete, label it that way. Do not put a credential you intend to obtain into a list of completed tickets.

Answer any work-rights or screening question accurately through the employer's requested process. Do not claim medical clearance from general fitness, and do not add identity numbers or sensitive medical details to a general cover letter. The vacancy and employer determine which checks and documents they require.

Check the application before you send it

  • The employer and role are correct throughout the letter and file name.
  • Every duty, qualification and availability statement is true for you.
  • At least one paragraph gives a concrete example related to this vacancy.
  • The dates and facts agree with your resume.
  • No brackets, sample company names or unused instructions remain.
  • You have followed the employer's requested file type, length and selection criteria.
  • You have opened the final file and checked every page on a normal screen.
